In August we usually plant some of our fallow beds into buckwheat. We usually don’t plant it in July, as beds that become available for planting in July are generally used for winter crops, and we don’t plant in in September as we find it doesn’t put on enough growth in the decreasing days of autumn to be worthwhile. Buckwheat in August is perfect, as it has plenty of time and daylight to make luxuriant growth, and we tend to have a number of beds empty during this month that aren’t needed for August-sown winter vegetables.
