For years I struggled with onions. I now know most of what I was doing wrong, and this spring I avoided most of my past mistakes. Growing onions from seed can be a long, slow journey, but now that my methods have been refined somewhat, I have decided that for me it is a journey worth taking. I started this year’s seeds inside, in early February, then moved them to a coldframe in March, then planted them out in the field in April. They are delicate, wispy little things for the first hundred days or so of their lives, and, in my experience they seem to sulk, refusing to continue growth, for a surprising number of weeks after transplanting. By the time they are growing quickly, sometime in June, I find myself so busy with other plants in other parts of the field that I don’t really notice the beginning of the onions’ transformation. By August the onion patch feels like the site of a miracle, and we have more onions than we could ever need, and they are all beautiful.

I’m glad to know that you believe in miracles. The onions we had for supper were beautiful & tasty. They will surely be good raw on a cheese sandwich or fried with butter, mushrooms and soy sauce. Thanks for dinner and showing us around the garden. Hope the CSA goes well.
