I have decided that I am pleased with Jessica and my decision to not erect any supports for our determinate tomatoes this year. We are finally harvesting good quantities of our earliest variety, ‘Latah’, and have found that they are perfectly manageable without cages/string/sticks holding the plants and fruits up off the mulch. In other tomato news, we are eagerly observing the fruit development on the ‘Ropreco’ plants, the paste-type determinate variety we are growing this year. These plants have been setting beautiful clusters of fruits, though they appear to be at least two weeks behind the ‘Latah’ fruits. Only time will tell how well this variety will work, though I feel that 2012 is shaping up to be a highly productive year for our crop of field tomatoes.

Any news/update on how the ‘Ropreco’ tomatoes fared AND tasted? Curious about this variety as they’re determinates and since I have limited space….:(
Grew the much touted ‘San Marzano’ toms this year, specifically for sauce making. I was highly sceptical initially but the end results have been great – as far as the taste goes. It’s also true that they are really low in seeds and with thin skins so perfect for processing. My one gripe though is that they don’t produce that much fruit per plant. (They probably spent the ‘Summer’ dreaming of Italian heat and a view of Mount Vesuvius, rather than North Van cool and Grouse Mountain.)
Great blog and photos, as ever!
