The construction of pea supports has always been the main source of relationship tension between Jessica and I. As Quadra Island’s cutest couple, it is important for us to try to keep things as harmonious as possible. To that end we recently purchased two hundred feet of Italian-made, UV-stable plastic netting. We’re sophisticated people, and only imported Italian legume supports will do. The netting cost us $0.32 per linear foot, and will hopefully last for many decades. We used ten-foot sections of rebar to hold up the netting, and guy wires at the ends of the beds to hold up the rebar. It has been a tremendous technological leap over past years’ hare brained pea support systems, most of which involved sticks, old twine, and yelling.

What variety of peas are those?
Pep pep – The peas in the photo are ‘Mammoth Melting Sugar’. We’re also growing ‘Oregon Sugar Pod II’, ‘Oregon Giant’, and Sugar Snap.
