Jessica and I have been bucking and splitting lots of firewood lately. I am proud to report that, as a result of this continued exertion, I have finally grown rippling, glistening washboard abs. Between the firewood and the abs, we haven’t had time for much in the way of stimulating horticultural activities this week. Also, it has been snowing and raining, and the field is still very wet. To make up for the lack of plant-related material in this post, I’ve included a short video of Steve Solomon talking about soil. He is one of my favourite garden authors, and in the video he brings up some very important ideas about coastal soil health. He doesn’t offer solutions in the video, but there are plenty to be found in his books and in the books of several other authors. There is much truth to the idea that, in our rainy climate, compost really isn’t all that is needed to produce soil with a proper balance of necessary plant nutrients.
