Our fledgling farm now has its own rototiller. I am on the fence when it comes to the use of this sort of machinery. One one hand, world petroleum supplies are dwindling, and tilling our fields with cheap fuel purchased from King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud may not be possible for much longer. On the other hand, cheap gas is still the norm, and perhaps we would be wise to take advantage while we can. While I have been moving toward no-dig gardening methods for some time now, I do expect to use this new tool to speed up development of some of the planting areas. I also intend to sheet-mulch and hand-dig much of the land, to keep the necessary muscles prepared for when gas hits fifteen dollars per litre in a couple of years.
